Oceania.gg

Oceania Gamers is an attempt to do what people told me couldn't be done; create a neutral, central location for Australian gamers to branch out from.

What I found is that it can be done, you just need to have a plan and a friend or two.

History

  • Created in 2019 as "Australasian Gamers".
  • Unknown when, but was renamed to 'Oceania Gamers' when 'oceania.gg' was purchased.
  • Originally started as a CS:GO community, with a Minecraft server and regular scrims.
  • When I got into Ark, I created my own PvE servers.
  • I ended up building my own server and hosting a full cluster. We switched to PvP to automate element production from Teks.
  • During COVID, the PVP server was picked up by a growing gaming community, and the Ark PvP players took over.
  • Multiple attempts to rebalance from our mess of a PvE setup.
  • Circa 2024, Ark was separated to Farkt.net.
  • OG was refactored to become a central discussion point for Australian Gamers.
  • OG channels were refactored 2025 while I was unemployed.
  • I think we called year of death in 2025.

What's wild is that I created the Discord server at midnight: 3/12/2019, 11:37:27 pm

Dead Interests

I don't really have any interest in maintaining it on-going.

I've done my fair share of begging but absolutely noone sees a vision in it. Anyone with an interest in creating their own community has just created their own community. Noone was interested in being a Switzerland in the space.

We had some moderators in Farkt but in-game administration is tough. We didn't have the tools.

I've refactored our cluster hosting and done some testing. Ark plugins basically hack the code debugging API to provide useful tools, but they all cost money.

Any real hope of propping up a dead games community dies in the financials.

The servers now cost circa $10,000, so any failed components will break the bank. The plugins looked to cost ~$500. Being available 24/7 and copping constant abuse doesn't really make me want to open my wallet.

My finances are also tied up in my own life. I have no interest in funding community projects anymore, not when the community doesn't re-contribute back in any meaningful way.

Potential Rejuvenation

I've had monetization ideas, but they rely on the community coming together.

Revitalization will only happen if we can move everything away from Discord. Until that day, the domain will remain squatted.

Community Histographer

Chips has written a full history of Oceania Gamers from the Ark perspective. It covers the entire Beach Bobs drama and everything that happened in other communities.

There's a PDF available that I'll scan and publish eventually.

I've asked Chips to publish it on Amazon, but it hasn't happened.
